Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Opening this weekend, Live at the Foxes Den follows mistake-prone lawyer, Bobby Kelly (Jackson Rathbone) as he realizes a secret talent for jazz singing after an impromptu performance at the cocktail lounge, Foxes Den. Following this performance, Kelly is offered the position of regular lounge singer, and must choose between his new talent and his old life as a lawyer. Among the lounge's patrons are two men with a "deep, unspoken relationship," played by Elliott Gould and Bob Gunton. The film is directed by Michael Kristoff and will be released in limited theaters. 2) Fox comedy, Mulaney, created by Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney, announced it will be adding a gay character. The show, which is based on Mulaney's life as a standup comic, will feature several Saturday Night Live cast members in upcoming episodes. Included on this cast list is Elliot Gould (also in Live at the Foxes Den), who will play Oscar, Mulaney's 71-year old gay, boisterous New York neighbor. There is no word yet on a production or air schedule for the comedy series.
3) Out Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are developing the new mini-series, Nemesis for NBC. Nemesis will be an eight-hour series about renowned Prohibition agent Eliot Ness, the same agent featured in The Untouchables. Nemesis is set after The Untouchables in 1935 when Ness takes over the case of the "Torso Killer," one of America's first serial killers. The mini-series will be written by Benjamin Brad, and executive produced by Brad and Adam Goldworm.
4) New singer/songwriter Warren Nomi has released a new single titled, "Love Out Loud." Originally written for Cher's latest album, Nomi's colleagues encouraged him to put the song out on his own after it didn't make the final album cut. Citing his own struggles with bullying as a child, Nomi hopes "Love Out Loud" will encourage others to work to end bullying. "Love out Loud" can be purchased on iTunes here, and Nomi is donating all proceeds to anti-bullying / suicide Prevention charities. Take a listen to the upbeat, pop-inspired single below!
5) Annaleigh Ashford will leave her Tony-nominated role as Lauren on Kinky Boots this spring to continue her TV role on Masters of Sex. The Showtime series, which recounts the groundbreaking human sexuality research of William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), features Ashford as Betty Dimello, a (lesbian) sex worker who helps Masters with his research. Following the success of her character arc during the Masters of Sex's first season, Ashford was promoted to series regular, prompting her departure from Kinky Boots.
6) Daniel Sobrino released his new single and video, "Box." Inspired by his own experiences with bullying, the out pop singer and pianist wrote "Box" as an "uplifting anthem for anyone who has ever experienced adversity." This is Sobrino's second single, following his debut song, "The Power of Us." Check out the video below!
7) But I'm a Cheerleader becomes a musical! An early musical version of the 1999 film had a sold out developmental workshop at the New York Theater Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best New Musical. But I'm a Cheerleader: The Musical will receive an exploratory reading in London December 6. The reading will be led by Jerry Mitchell, producer of Kinky Boots, with book and lyrics by Bill Augustin and Andrew Abrams.
8) Launched by SnagFilms, The World AIDS Day Channel hopes to raise awareness and educate viewers about AIDS through 21 compelling films that provide a personal perspective of the effects of AIDS. Featuring titles such as Pedro, Jeffrey, Alicia in Africa, The Mulberry Tree, and Not to Me, all 21 films can be streamed for free at SnagFilms here.
9) Inscription Magazine needs your support to create a free online science fiction and fantasy publication for teens focused on telling more diverse stories in the genre. These will include LGBT characters as well as characters of color, people with disabilities, and from diverse religious, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. Inscription Magazine will make a new story available each month completely free for a year. Funding will go towards paying authors, illustrators and designers.
